This picture shows the beach on 3rd February before the major storms, the beach is at the level of the top step on the sea wall. The people in the picture are part of Plymouth University Coastal Research Group who were surveying the beach.

At this time the Environment Agency had employed contractors to move shingle to maintain the beach as a natural defence against further wave attack.
At this time the gabion tower by the Cove Inn was in good condition.
The gabion mattress was also intact. This was protecting the crest of the beach from erosion.
